Robert Charles Young, 76, of Tunkhannock, PA, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017. Born in Keyport, NJ on June 9, 1940, he was the son of the late Charles I. Young, Jr. and Elinor Duncan Young.
Bob graduated as valedictorian from Keyport High School in 1957, and from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA, in 1961 with a Bachelor of Arts in geology. While at Lehigh, he was a brother in Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity and a member of the university track team. He continued his graduate studies in education at Rutgers University.
He taught earth science and geology for five years in the Keyport and Holmdel, NJ school systems, then for 20 years in the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, where he also coached track and cross-country. He traveled extensively in both the USA and Europe during his summers, collecting rocks and minerals to share with his students. He retired in 1986, having received the Governor’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
Through his years of retirement in Tunkhannock, PA, he owned his own small business, Country Cabin Antiques, and enjoyed buying pieces of furniture at auctions and refinishing them for resale at various shows and flea markets. He also helped coach the cross-country team at Tunkhannock High School for a short time.
He loved his family and friends and spent many memorable times with them over the years. His knowledge and research of family history, artifacts, and geneology made him the family historian. He will be missed by all who knew him. May he now rest in peace.
He was also preceded in death by his sister, Betty Jean Burkhardt, and brother-in-law, Kasson E. Crooker.
He is survived by his sister, Marilyn Young Crooker, niece, Heidi Crooker Nathanielsz and her husband David, and his great-nephews Oliver and Graham of Delmar, NY; nephew David Burkhardt and great-nephew, Connor of Hardwick, NJ; nephew Douglas Burkhardt and great-nieces, Allison and Brianna of Kernersville, NC; and nephew Kasson D.
