Robert J. Russell, 81, of Tunkhannock, passed away on Friday, July 12, 2024, at Lehigh Valley Hospital-Poconos. He is survived by his wife of 28 years, Pamela Nystrand.
Born on April 12, 1943, in Scranton, he was the son of the late Carl and Adella (DeSarro) Russell.
Bob honorably served in the United States Navy from 1961 to 1966 as a parachute rigger and LSO Phone Talker aboard the USS Intrepid, playing a key role in the recovery of the Gemini 3 space capsule in 1965. He was recognized by the commanding officer of U.S. Naval Air Technical Training Unit, NAS, Lakehurst, New Jersey for his volunteerism with the Drill Team and Color Guard service from 1962 through 1964, including acting as Drillmaster when necessary.
Following his military service, Bob worked for Procter and Gamble for an impressive 37 years, retiring in 2005. During his tenure, he won the Pennsylvania Governor's Award for creating the "BRAT" Training Safety Program, which he presented to many P&G sites and some schools.
Bob had a passion for drawing, was a loyal fan of the NY Yankees, and never missed an episode of Blue Bloods. He enjoyed discovering hidden gem restaurants, indulging in food and shopping adventures, and loved home projects, tinkering, and inventing. He also took pleasure in writing Google reviews, reading consumer reports, bike riding, and listening to music. He was an engaging and entertaining storyteller, sharing the tales of his life experiences and imparting words of wisdom that captivated and inspired everyone who listened. Above all, he treasured spending quality time with his children and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by sons, Brian Russell, Tanner Nystrand (Brittany), Nathan Nystrand (Michaela); daughter, Jennifer Giannone (Vince); brother, Joseph Russell; grandchildren, Russ Myslewicz, Daniel and Jessica Russell, Keeley, Matthew and Eric Landis, Wesley and Wyatt Nystrand; father-in-law, John Robinson; sister-in-law, Penny Raza; best friend, Joseph Bonifanti; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by sister, MaryAnn Doughtery; mother-in-law, Donna Robinson; sister-in-law, Connie Russell; loving cousin, Frankie DeSarro.
Family and friends are invited to attend Bob's memorial service which will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 at 5:00 PM from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73. W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, PA 18657 with Rev. Daniel Miller presiding.
A visitation will be held from 4:00 PM until the time of service on Monday.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Bob's name to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
