Maria Newhart

June 22, 1962 — February 18, 2025

Maria P. Newhart, 62, of Tunkhannock, PA passed away peacefully on February 18, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on June 22, 1962, in Scranton, PA, she was the daughter of the late Edith Lammie Pompey and the late Dr. Danel T. Pompey, Sr. She was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory High School.

We will remember Maria for her love of life. The absolute center of her world was her family. Her sons Seth and Peter, and husband Denny were her reason for being. She cherished the time with them and the memories they shared. Maria never grew tired of talking about them, and the experiences in their lives and successes. The level of care and compassion they gave to Maria during her multiple long illnesses was a testament to their family and the bonds they shared.

Her distinctive and infectious laughter was heard everywhere she went. She enjoyed the visits of her nieces and nephews, and their young children. Her love of dancing and music is unforgettable. Her jokes and quick wit will be remembered by the people she traded barbs with. She possessed an intensity of life that was very strong yet vulnerable.

She was married to Dennis Newhart for over 30 years. Together they have two sons, Seth Newhart and Peter Newhart, both of Tunkhannock, PA. In addition to her husband and two sons, she is survived by her sisters, Ann Giglio and her spouse, Bobby, Old Forge, PA; Rita Pompey and her spouse, Debbie Gordon, Media, PA; brothers, Charles W. Pompey and spouse, Gwen Kibler Pompey, Hawley, PA; Daniel Pompey and spouse, Laura Russin Pompey, Olyphant, PA; Vincent Pompey and spouse, Kat Hunt Pompey, Portugal; Matthew Pompey and spouse, Sharon Martin Pompey, Clarks Summit, PA; David Pompey and spouse, Carla D'Agostino, Naples, FL; 21 nieces and nephews

She was preceded in death by her parents Edith Lammie Pompey and Dr. Daniel T. Pompey Sr. and her husband, Kevin Hunt.

Maria holds a very special place in the hearts of the people who knew and loved her. She will be remembered fondly and greatly missed.

A celebration of life will be held on a future date with details to be determined.

Arrangements and care entrusted to Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 W. Tioga St., Tunkhannock, PA 18657.
