Gertrude L. Billings, 87, of Factoryville, passed away on Monday, September 30, 2024 at the Embassy of Tunkhannock. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, James Billings.
Born on August 19, 1937 in Old Forge, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Kosciuk) Bohenek.
She graduated from Scranton Central High School in 1955. Gertrude received her nursing degree in 1958 from Hahnemann Hospital School of Nursing, now known as Geisinger Community Medical Center.
Gertrude was a dedicated nurse for many years and locations. Early in her career, as her husband was serving in the military, she traveled with him and worked as a civilian nurse in the states of Florida and Virginia. She also worked at Corry Memorial Hospital and Hershey Medical Center in Pennsylvania. After returning home to Lake Winola, she worked at Moses Taylor Hospital in Scranton for 4 years. In 1974, she was then employed by Arthur Sherwood family medical practice which later transitioned to Geisinger. During this time she also gave many years of service to Carpenter Care Nursing Home. She continued to proudly serve and provide excellent nursing care to the community for many generations until she retired in 2016.
In her spare time, Gertrude enjoyed the ocean, spending time at Nantucket Island with her close friend Janet and her cousin Paul. She enjoyed spectating her children's and grandchildren's sporting events, cheering them on and only occasionally disagreeing with the referees.
Gertrude's joy in life was reflected not only in her work, but also in the love she had for her family and the faith she held as a member of St. Mary of the Lake parish. She treasured spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She always found happiness in their company. Her unconditional love, support, and influence made her the rock of her family home. She was truly compassionate, always placing everyone before herself. Everybody was family in her home, and home was everywhere she went.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by children: Michelle Colvin and husband Jerry; Suzanne Korb and husband Richard; Frank Billings and wife Diane, Grandchildren: Jason Olive and wife Gina, Joshua Olive, James Olive, Michael White, Aaron Billings and wife Courtney, Adam Billings and wife Kayla, Avery Billings and wife Makayla; several great-grandchildren; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Frank Bohenek, and sister, Maryann Kulick.
The family also gives their deepest, sincerest thanks to the staff at Embassy of Tunkhannock for their kind care and compassion while taking care of Gertrude during her stay.
