George L. Matusavige, age 92, of Centermoreland, passed away on Thursday, October 11, 2012, at Celtic Healthcare, Dunmore after a short illness.
Born in Pittston on January 13, 1920 he was a son of the Late George J. and Margret Whitcare Matusavige.
He graduated from Tunkhannock High School, class of 1938 and remained a loyal Tiger Fan watching his children and grandchildren participate.
George entered the army during WWII and was stationed in Germany for three years. He returned and worked for several garages and in 1948 purchased Centermoreland Garage, expanding the original building to its present size in 1954.
In 1957 he became a MM dealer, and was part owner of Georgeâs Trucking Service and later owned the Fuel and Bus Service. George retired at 57 due to a heart attack, and became a snow bird until a truck accident three years age. He spent his remaining time with his three daughters. George was an avid hunter and played Sunday hardball until the age of 41.
He was a wonderful man, who was always there to help his children and grandchildren as much as possible.
Preceding him in death was his wife of 47 years Aletha (Peg) Ring Matusavige; sisters Helen Ford, Madelyn Space, Gertrude Wikowski, Genieve Kuhlmey, and Irene Sherwood; grandson Gene Matusavige and great-grandson Jeffrey Matusavige.
Surviving are his children: George A. Matusavige of Centermoreland, Sally Stewart of Southern Pines, NC, Karen Welch and husband Jack of Tunkhannock; Marie Anderson and husband Frank of Dallas. Grandchildren: Gordon J. Matusavige, who now operates Centermoreland Garage; Gary Matusavige, Danny Bartlet; Stacey Weaver; Lucas and Derek Welch; Brook Cumbo and Frank Anderson; Great-grandchildren; Gordon J. Matusavige; Cooper Weaver, Genevieve Whittaker and Alexis Mock.
Funeral services were held on Monday, October 15th from the Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home, Inc. 73 West Tioga St. Tunkhannock with interment in Sunnyside Cemetery Tunkhannock. On line condolences may be sent to the family at www.sheldonkukuchkafuneralhome.com.
