Eugene Cornelius Yonchiuk 74, of Prospect Hill, Tunkhannock passed away on Thursday at the Golden Living Center, Tunkhannock, PA.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 45 years, Helen Collins Yonchiuk who died in December 2000. He was born in Tunkhannock on March 4, 1935, son of the late Cornelius and Mary Strumski Yonchiuk.
He was a graduate of Tunkhannock High School and employed by the Lehigh Valley and Conrail Railroads until retirement. He was the founder and owner of the Tunkhannock Monument Company which he operated for 46 years.
Gene was an active member of the Nativity BVM, Caretaker of the Pieta Cemetery, and a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also remained an active member of the Alphonsus Retreat League. Gene was also a volunteer fireman with the Triton Hose Company.
Gene is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Gerard and Wendi Yonchiuk of Harrisburg, daughters Mary Ann Yonchiuk of Tunkhannock, Margaret (Peggy) Fortese of Hagerstown, MD, and Barbara and George Toczko-Maculloch of Wyoming, PA.
Grandchildren, Jimmy and Mathew Fortese, Tyler, Shayne, Colby, Riley Yonchiuk, Rachel Maculloch; step grandchildren Bryan and Megan Maculloch; Several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 3 at 10 am from the Sheldon Kukuchka Funeral Home, 73 West Tioga Street, Tunkhannock with mass of Christian burial at the church of the Nativity BVM in Tunkhannock at 10:30. Interment will at Pieta Cemetery, Tunkhannock.
