Emily M. Barnes

d. August 23, 2015

Emily M. Lane Barnes, 92, returned to the Lord in the evening of Sunday, August 23, 2015, surrounded by family in the Intensive Care Unit of Guthrie in Sayre, PA. Emily was born to Lillian and Clarence Lane on December 29, 1922, the eleventh of twelve children. Growing up in the depression, Emily developed a love of family and a commitment to hard work. Emily will be remembered for her strength and independence. She raised her two children on her own, often working two jobs to support them and instilling in them integrity, values, and an appreciation for life. Emily worked for twenty-nine years in the cafeteria of the Tunkhannock School District, a career which she loved and which allowed her to attend classes at Penn State University. She was an active member in various organizations of the Tunkhannock United Methodist Church. She loved her country and family. Outside of her civic and professional commitments, Emily will be most remembered as “Nana” to countless numbers of children. She was always ready with a hot dish on the stove for any company that might stop by and she decorated her house, inside and out, for every holiday. While she never wanted to fight about politics or religion at the dinner table, she would listen forever about her family’s personal lives. In her spare time, she loved singing with the children, watching westerns and “Wheel of Fortune,” and landscaping her outside yard. Emily was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Frank Barnes, Jr., her son, Bradford N. Barnes, an infant son, William Barnes, as well as the following siblings: Ronald, Josephine, Mary Louise, Charles, Ethel, Eva, Stanley, Helen Rose, Alice, Betty, and Mabel. Emily is survived by her daughter, Judith Barnes Gorman, her grandchildren, Thomas Gorman, Susan Gorman Bailey, Dr. Jill Gorman, PollyAnn Barnes, Joanna Barnes, Victoria Barnes, Sarah Barnes, and Bradford Barnes, and her great-grandchildren, William Brague, Emily Gorman, Jesse Bailey, Loribeth Bailey Barden, Mercedes Bailey, Michael Barnes, Patrick Evans, and Matthew Evans, as well as her great-great-grandchildren, Liam and Wyatt Barden. Funeral services will be private arrangements by Sheldon-Kukuchka Funeral Home Inc. 73 West Tioga St. Tunkhannock, Pa. For on line condolences please visit www.sheldonkukuchkafuneralhome.com.
